One of the most memorable moments of the 2009 playoffs happened on the 2nd day of the playoffs immediately before Game 1 of the Blackhawks/Flames series. In a tradition that has struggled to take hold since the destruction of the old Chicago Stadium, this season has seen the Chicago fans start cheering during the National Anthem once again. The fans cheering during the Star Spangled Banner might not be as loud as it once was in the old stadium, but you wouldn’t know it by this video!
You could tell that the fans thought this would be a different season from the outset—from standing room only sell outs to renewing a tradition that makes fans in Chicago special.
Maybe it’s just all of the pent up energy that all of the Hawks fans have been saving up all season! Forget just this season, maybe it’s all of the energy the fans have been saving up after only 1 playoff appearance in the last 11 years. Either way, the Hawks faithful look like they’re ready for this 2nd trip!
You can see video on TV of the Chicago crowds going nuts, but I like this video a little better. This is what it looks like, feels like and SOUNDS like in the middle of the cheap seats during one of the best things in sports. If this doesn’t get you going and give you goose bumps to start a playoff game, then maybe sports isn’t the thing for you. I have to say, it was definitely better than the Montreal Canadiens fans booing the National Anthem!
By the way, the Blackhawks beat the Flames in overtime. As great as this was– just remember, the gold-standard is (and always will be) the NHL All-Star game in the old Chicago Stadium in 1991. In case you don’t remember, just a little something to remember how they do it in the Windy City…
