White Jerseys = Home (Get it right NHL!)

by Matt Reitz on April 4, 2009

For anyone that isn’t a hardcore NHL fan, this post isn’t going to make any sense. For those of you that are, this is something that probably drives you nuts to no end. I understand that the League (read: Gary Bettman) thinks there is nothing more important that trying to make money in every area of the game. I get it, that’s what he does—and its only 1 reason out of a million why he doesn’t “get” what makes hockey special and why he’s a horrible commissioner. But this isn’t a bash Gary Bettman post—no, this is more of an open ended question to him: When are the NHL teams going to go back to wearing their WHITE jerseys at home?

It shouldn't be that difficult: these should be HOME jerseys!

It shouldn't be that difficult: these should be HOME jerseys!

I got to thinking about this because of the Philadelphia/Toronto home-and-home series on Thursday and Friday. It just looked RIGHT. Flyers playing the rival Maple Leafs, goals being scored, fights aplenty, it was like 1980s hockey. And I could TELL the Flyers were at home in the 2nd game because they were wearing WHITE!

Like I said, I get why the league decided to do this in the first place. You see, the NHL started doing this so they could be promoting 3rd jerseys at home. The teams wanted to use more and more alternate jerseys, which are always of differing colors. If the home team were to wear DARK, then their team could market their new jerseys to their home fan base a few times per year.

In this day and age, would it be too hard to have the capabilities to wear either jersey on the road? Be like football and let the home team choose or something? If the Kings want to wear their 3rd jerseys at home to sell a few more pieces of swag, then let them. Otherwise, the default is white jerseys at home.

I know this is a bigger deal with hockey fans than anyone talks about. Everyone I talk to has been annoyed about it since the lockout; and I know most of us STILL can’t get used to it. When I’m watching a Wings/Oilers game and the Red Wings are wearing white, they SHOULD BE IN DETROIT! It usually takes me a few minutes to figure out why the game started so late. It’s not because I’m slow, it’s not because I’m usually drinking if I’m forcing myself to watch a Red Wings game, it’s because the teams are wearing the wrong jerseys!

Baseball does it, basketball does it, hockey used to do it—and football is king and can do whatever they damn well please. It’s one of those things that really shouldn’t be much of a big deal to anyone that cares. The only people that care want the white. So what the hell is the problem? The alternate jersey thing has served its purpose for the home fans; so why not wear the dark jerseys on the road for the rest of the league to see them? Who knows, they might even be able to SPREAD and promote apparel outside their isolated markets! That’s not nearly shortsighted enough for this commissioner though.

When it comes down to it, the only people that care about this are the longtime fans of the NHL. Newcomers or fringe fans probably don’t even notice which teams wear what—but for us longtime fans, it’s a big deal. It’s simple and it’s obvious! Fix it so I can go back to knowing who’s at home without listening for the crowd! It would be a small token to the fans from the league that says, “Hey, we know this is something you wanted fixed, so here ya go.” A small token like that can go a long way! Until then, we’ll just have to sit back and watch as they slow remove fighting and checking from the Greatest Game on Earth.

I'm with you Matt. I'm 50 years old and a NY Rangers fan. I grew up in the era of the white at home sweater. I, too, after 5 seasons am still not used to the dark sweaters at home. As a season ticket holder I can't stand seeing the Rangers in their blue shirts, even though that's their old time nickname (The Broadway Blueshirts). I believe their home (excuse me, white road sweater) is one of the classiest in the NHL, along with Montreal, Toronto and Chicago, and miss seeing it at home.
I hate seeing the visitors at MSG in their whites. I'm all for changing back. I have a white and blue Rangers sweater so that didn't affect my purchase of one, although I hated their 3rd Liberty sweater and never bought one of those.

if you've ever read “the hockey sweater” by roch carrier, you know that “real” hockey fans want coloured jerseys at home – no kid growing up in the Original 6 days dreamt of a white canadiens or maple leafs sweater. bobby orr flying through the boston garden air was wearing black, not white. red wings wear RED at home. canadiens wear the tricolour. the maple leafs last won the stanley cup in 1967, at home, wearing blue! dark at home, always.

I hate seeing the same colors ever f***ing game. Just because you don’t see your teams colored jersey means you won’t buy it? so what, go buy a white one then, or just use your grown-up initiative and buy a dark one anyway. All the reasons and arguments against going to whites at home are just so trivial and mundane. Seeing the opposing team coming in with a new color gives each game more individuality and can help you identify with the games and season on a more personal level. The fact that this change was done to help the bottom line only further infuriates me, the NHL is a border line prostitution ring now, bending over and f***ing their fans for money.

Agree 1,000%! WHITE AT HOME, anything else is insane! I am tired of watching every visiting team look the same when I go to my team’s home games. This idiotic trend started with the 2003-2004 season (last season before the lockout), and it should have ended right after the lockout! Go back to white at home!

“When it comes down to it, the only people that care about this are the longtime fans of the NHL. Newcomers or fringe fans probably don’t even notice which teams wear what—but for us longtime fans, it’s a big deal.”

IF by longtime fans of the NHL you mean anyone under the age of 38… then I understand your point. Prior to 71… Dark Sweaters = Home, White = Away. Goes back to the original 6…
I say stop wasting your energy ranting and use a little bit of your brain to think.
“Until then, we’ll just have to sit back and watch as they slow remove fighting and checking from the Greatest Game on Earth.” I think this maybe why you can’t figure out which team is the home team. “Hard-core NHL fans” could feel insulted unless you further define the term.

haha… actually I am only 35… I just know a bit of NHL trivia and love to be the devils(not New Jersey) advocate every once in a while. I agree that it was a bit confusing when they first switch sweaters but… it really isn’t that hard to figure out now, is it?

Hard to figure out and what seems natural are 2 different things. No it’s hard to figure out you know with the cheer of the crowd and that giant logo in to center of the ice. But it doesnt feel natural. I had season seats to the Kings for 10 years. When you go and see so many home games at such a young time in your life i guess itn just sticks with you.

Thanks, I agree with you 100%. I am a hard-core NHL fan (& you don’t have to drink heavily to watch the Red Wings; they’re my team). Speaking of, the Red Wings are a great example of what you’re saying, I cannot get used to the red sweaters at the Joe. I always think of the Red Wings in white at home. I’m sure there are many hard-core purists out there, like you & me, that feel the same way.

I was always wondering why, and I knew the league was mandating it, but the league must give the teams a certain # of home games where they can choose, because I have tuned in to the Red Wings at home and seen highlights this year where they are at home in white (as it should be).

You’re right, most sports, the home team wears white. NFL football, the home team has the choice. I’m in Houston and what I have been seeing is weather related with NFL home teams; they wear white at the start of the season, due to the heat (e.g. Carolina, Miami, Tampa BAy, Jacksonville) then switch to dark jerseys for the latter half of the season. Houston Texans do this, although I don’t know why, as Houston has a retractable roof, so in the early part of the season, they’re a dome team!!

Anyway, back to the NHL. What you said, makes sense, to market alternative jerseys. Bettman is short-sighted; fans of a team will still by the alternate jerseys if they are the road jerseys!! Can’t agree with you more, home NHL teams belong in their white sweaters!! Funny, the AHL and probably all the other pro hockey leagues still wear white at home!!

The Kings wore yellow back in the day. I THINK that ALL hickey teams should wear YELLOW as their home colors…. LOL
