I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California…

by Matt Reitz on September 7, 2009

“I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California” is a feature that will be posted every Saturday here at the View From My Seats. There are plenty of things going on in the hockey world (and even the sports world); and you know everyone has an opinion. This is a place for some quick hits of the week that was.

I might just be a hockey fan/guy in California, but:

- Teams that pick up 3 defensemen in one day are trying to Cup THIS season. I’m looking at you Vancouver Canucks.

- Patrick Kane, 20 cents and cab drivers is never going to get old.

As much as the NHL might want to fight it, you know Cote will look to throw if he get's the chance.

- With guys like Len Barrie and Jerry Moyes, it seems like Jim Balsillie would fit right in with the fraternity of NHL owners.

- I can’t believe Manny Malhotra, Maxim Afinogenov, Mike Comrie and Rob Niedermayer still don’t have jobs.

- I think that Redfield T. Baum could become the NHL’s version of Judge Ito.

- Road trips that last a month and a half are too long for ANY NHL team. I don’t care if there’s an Olympic break in the middle—that’s too damn long.

- The people of Edmonton might hate Dany Heatley as much as the city of Denver hates Jay Cutler.

- Comcast owning Versus seems like it has the potential to create a conflict of interests. I’m just saying…

- The NHLPA’s firing of Paul Kelly just proves that they STILL don’t get it. For some reason, the WORST CASE SCENARIO handbook should have something for potential NHL work stoppages.

- The off-season might be too short for some of the good teams, but it’s still WAY too long for us fans.

- If the NHL could get just HALF the attention that ESPN gives to Brett Favre, there would be NO financial problems for any of the teams.

- If that running back from Oregon pulled that shit in a hockey game, he wouldn’t have been acting as tough as he was on the way out of the stadium. Can you imagine him doing that to Rob Ray or Tie Domi? Exactly. Hockey Fights > Football Fights

- As much as the Islanders hate to admit this, you can only play 1 goaltender at a time. Even if one of them is perpetually injured and signed through the 2078-79 season—still only one at a time.

- I want to see a Riley Cote vs. Milan Lucic fight in the Winter Classic at Fenway. Hey, it would be good for the league!

- Two straight Finals appearances and the Olympics in the middle of the season—that’s A LOT of hockey for the Penguins and Red Wings.

- Avalanche and Islander fans might want to start familiarizing themselves with the names Taylor Hall and Teemu Pulkkinen.

- If Bryan Little played in the Northeast, people might know that he scored 31 goals last season.

- I’m glad that the mini-Habs and the Maple Leafs open the season against one another.

- If you’re not drinkin’ the Kool-Aid for your team right now, it’s going to be a long season. If you are—well, you still might be in for a long season!

- Gary Bettman is a pompous little person that needs to be fired for the good of the game.

So what are your thoughts on the off-season that was?

If you've been back this many times and aren't a subscriber, what are you waiting for? Even if our RSS feeds scare the hell you (because you don't quite understand RSS), we promise the email alerts aren't painful at all. Seriously, a money-back-guarantee-even-though-its-free kind of promise.
