“I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California” is a feature that will be posted every Saturday here at the View From My Seats. There are plenty of things going on in the hockey world (and even the sports world); and you know everyone has an opinion. This is a place for some quick hits of the week that was.
_______________
I might just be a hockey fan in California, but:
- Starting this week, the Thrashers were 7-2-1 with Ilya Kovalchuk and 3-4-0 without him. Interesting how much a single guy can affect a team.
- Its interesting how so many people were quick to comment on the Coyotes attendance struggles; yet no one seems to mention it as it’s been steadily increasing. I guess positive stories about hockey in the desert don’t do well.
- Are the Ducks really this bad this year?
- If the NHL had standings like the BCS, would there be an Atlantic Division bias?
- Karma has a way of working everything out. The Kings were the beneficiaries of a goaltender interference call against the Lightning. Two days later—the shoe was on the other foot. The Hockey Gods are fair.
- You can’t truly appreciate Mike Richards’ leadership until you’re sitting near the glass for the game. If he doesn’t make Team Canada, they the United States government should rush some dual-citizenship paperwork on his behalf.
- I’m ready for the Clippers to move to the Honda Center so the Kings don’t have to keep playing Saturday afternoon games.
- If you put me on a line with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, even I would have 20 goals.
- The Canadiens should just try to get every game to overtime. The Habs are 8-0 in games that go to extra time (4 OT wins, 4 shootout wins); but they’re only 2-11 in regulation. They might be 12th in the East, but it really could be a lot worse.
- When a guy hits someone from behind and the opponent injures his head against the glass, there WILL be a suspension. Whether it was dangerous and dirty or not. Always. (see: Neal, James)
- Kerry Fraser should still be reffing games without a helmet.
- You’d be surprised how LITTLE of the ice you can see when you’re sitting in the 6th row behind a net. Everything from the blueline out was a joke! I guess those cheap seats aren’t so bad.
- It’s sad that 99% of the New York Times’ hockey content has been relegated to their online site. Maybe hockey doesn’t translate to actual print.
- The University of Georgia mascot—Uga VII—passed away this week. A local network in Atlanta had it as their #3 story of the day. In related news, the Atlanta Thrashers still have NEVER made that list. Ever.
- It’s irritating how arbitrary the “message sending” from Colin Campbell’s office can be.
- When you’re team gets out shot by twice as many shots and you hang on for a win, you should shut the fuck up and be happy for the win. Talking trash about how much better your team is just sounds stupid.
- The League on FX. That is all.
- People need to realize that hockey is a marathon, not a sprint. Just because a team is in first (or last place) now, doesn’t mean they will be there at the end of the year. THAT is when it matters.
- For some reason, the Edmonton Oilers just seem like a 12th place team in the West. However, the Vancouver Canucks don’t. Ahh, expectations.
- Going into this week, there were only TWO teams in the entire NHL that had not lost in regulation at home. The Sharks 6-0-2 record is fairly predictable. But the Tampa Bay Lightning are 5-0-4 at home. Is it that hard to win in Tampa?
- Phil Kessel has recorded 43 shots in only 8 games with the Maple Leafs. That’s approximately 43 more than the number of passes he’s dished out to his teammates.
- Gary Bettman is a pompous little person that needs to be fired for the good of the game.

Still a BS suspension. Especially considering what Mike Richards and Rob Scuderi got away with. I’d have an easier time accepting the Neal suspension if those two players had been suspended for their transgressions.
SCOREBOARD! Nothing else needs to be said.
