I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California (Dec 12)

by Matt Reitz on December 12, 2009

“I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California” is a feature that will be posted every Saturday here at the View From My Seats. There are plenty of things going on in the hockey world (and even the sports world); and you know everyone has an opinion. This is a place for some quick hits of the week that was.

I might just be a hockey fan in California, but:

"Come on. Do I look like a guy that can say 'Sophomore Slump?' Um, no."

"Come on. Do I look like a guy that can say 'Sophomore Slump?' Um, no."

- Anyone that pretends that prior history doesn’t play a part in NHL suspensions should look squarely at Daniel Carcillo.

- I don’t think Steven Stamkos, Drew Doughty or Zach Bogosian even know how to SAY “Sophomore Slump.”

- This just in: The Maple Leafs are going to trade Vesa Toskula, Ian White and a 1st rounder for Roy Halladay.

- If the Devils and the Capitals were in the Eastern Conference finals, would anyone have the balls to hype it up as: Exciting vs. Boring?

- The commercials that the NHL has put together for the Winter Classic are genius. Goosebump alert.

- The Canucks are off to a slow start this season. Do they not realize that they have a road trip that’s over a month long coming up?

- Ty Conklin has less than a month to get traded to the Flyers or Bruins for the Winter Classic. Wait, Ray Emery just got hurt, didn’t he? Hmmm.

- John Tavares is starting to explode and show exactly why he was the #1 overall pick in last June’s draft. He had 4 goals in a two game stretch earlier this week. Then again, the Islanders as an entire team only had 4 goals.

- I wonder if the Calgary Flames could just play all 82 games away from the Saddledome. Judging by their record, they might be OK with that.

- If you stayed up for the Sharks/Kings game on Wednesday night, you are one of the lucky ones.

- Who has a better chance of winning the Heisman? A defensive player or a running back on the West Coast (that doesn’t play for USC)? I say Ovechkin for Heisman.

"We are NOT this bad. Wait, we aren't, right?"

"We are NOT this bad. Wait, we aren't, right?"

- I know that fans in Toronto don’t like this, but the nickname “MakeBeliefs” makes me laugh every time I hear it.

- People are looking at Peter Laviolette’s start in Philly all wrong. Yes, the Flyers were outscored 11-3 in his first two games behind the bench. But now there’s nowhere to go but up, right?

- I’ll be honest: I can’t get my mind around 103 shutouts. For some perspective, Ryan Miller just earned his 16th.

- When will the Red Wings stop sucking? There are hockey fans in 14 cities in the Western Conference just waiting for the inevitable.

- Listening to agent Allan Walsh talk about the best Twitter practices is kind of like listening to Courtney Love speak about sobriety.

- The Nashville Predators are a good hockey team. Since no other outlet outside of Tennessee is going to tell you that any time soon, I thought I’d drop the knowledge.

- 51 years old is too old to play hockey. I’m looking at you Slava Fetisov.

- Do baseball fans really care what the Red Sox and Yankees are doing in December? I’m pretty sure I don’t.

- I’m in the market for a 13 year contract. Duncan Keith is not.

- Gary Bettman is a pompous little person that needs to be fired for the good of the game.
