“I Might Just Be A Hockey Fan In California” is a feature that will be posted every Saturday here at the View From My Seats. There are plenty of things going on in the hockey world (and even the sports world); and you know everyone has an opinion. This is a place for some quick hits of the week that was.

I might just be a hockey fan in California, but:
- Can the NHL do a 30 second spot during the Super Bowl? Maybe that would help.
- The consensus reason that Hitchcock was fired was because Steven Mason forgot how to stoppucks in the offseason. Simple formula: Goaltender stops pucks = team wins more games = head coach doesn’t get fired.
- The Edmonton Oilers didn’t win a single game in January. Three days into February, they have TWO wins. Congrats.
- Earlier this week, the Washington Capitals were 25 points ahead of the 2nd place Tampa Bay Lightning in the Southeast. Bigger surprise: That the Caps are running way with the division by that kind of margin or that the Lightning are actually in 2nd place?
- How good is your life when you are in the position to reject an employment offer for $101 million?
- When are people going to realize that Olli Jokinen just isn’t that great?
- I know its cliché for someone to say, “We just need to take care of our games,” but its ridiculous how close the standings are. I find myself just rooting against 3-point games.
- The Chicago Blackhawks, the City of Vancouver and limo rides with teenaged girls. How did anyone think that would be a bad idea?
- Jack Johnson flying up to Vancouver to walk in the Opening Ceremonies, then flying back to California as fast as he can for a game the next night is pretty awesome.
- I’m sorry, but I thought the trade deadline was in March?
- Just imagine if Tomas Vokoun had a team in front of him in Florida.
- When the Kings (and Ducks) are mentioned on NBC Los Angeles, you KNOW they’re hot. Of course, there were the obligatory Gretzky references.
- I know that the Blackhawks have been the most dominant team this season. But the #1 rule that I hold onto in hockey still applies: If you have two #1 goalies, then you don’t even have one.
- I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Larry Brooks of the New York Post does NOT like John Tortorella. God bless the New York media.
- I would like to temporarily retract my “Mike Modano should retire” article. It takes a big man to admit he was wrong—and I must be very big.
- Winning one game at home against a back-up goaltender does not equal the playoffs. I’m not saying that the Leafs don’t have a shot to make the playoffs in the relatively weak Eastern Conference, but this is bad for even Toronto. Seriously, some perspective please.
- How long will Ken Hitchcock be unemployed? Here’s a better question: Does the trade freeze include a clause that prohibits someone from hiring him during the Olympic break? If so, that changes my bet.
- People say that you can throw out the records when Montreal and Boston get together. If you asked either team, I’m sure they’d love to throw out their record.
- If the Predators decide that they indeed want to move Dan Hamhuis before the deadline, someone is going to get a very good, very underrated defenseman.
- Has there ever been a quieter 10-game winning streak than Ottawa’s recent streak? I guess that Jason Spezza guy is pretty good.
- Gary Bettman is a pompous little person that needs to be fired for the good of the game.
